Who this is for

If the building stopped fitting the message, you are the reader.

You walked away

The Sunday performance stopped working. You left and never went back. You also never stopped wondering if something true was buried under all that.

You were hurt

The people who promised love handed you control. The pastor who said "family" billed you for membership. You are still carrying scars nobody acknowledged.

You still have questions

Nobody at the welcome center had real answers. You stopped asking out loud because the silence in response was its own answer.

You were told suffering was punishment

When the cancer came. When the marriage ended. When the child was lost. Somebody said God allowed it for a reason. You never forgot.

You are exhausted by performance faith

The smiling, the volunteering, the small group circuit, the worship face. You went home empty more weeks than you went home full.

You still believe there has to be more

Something in you refuses to let the question die. That refusal is not a defect. That is the part of you the book is written for.

The Hard Question

What if the Jesus
you left was never him?

Somewhere in the 2,000 years between Jerusalem and today, something went badly wrong. The come-as-you-are message became a dress code. The guilt-free invitation became a ledger of sins. The God who pursued you became the God who punished you.

The Jesus you walked away from may have been a version handed to you by people who never knew him either.

01
The Church Machine
A movement of fishermen and tax collectors got reorganized into a corporation with stained glass and stewardship sermons. The message survived the building project. Most members did not.
02
Performance Christianity
Grace got traded for grades. The cross got replaced with a checklist. You started measuring yourself against people who were faking it harder than you were.
03
Political Christianity
When a tribe replaces a Savior, the cross becomes a flag. The cross was never a flag. The cross was a confession that the people waving flags were the problem he came for.
04
Prosperity Culture
The gospel of getting what you want is not a gospel. It is a transaction with a deity who does not exist. The real Jesus offers something harder and better than your best life now.
05
First Century Return
There were no churches in 34 AD. There were no programs. There was a message that spread like a brush fire across an empire that tried to silence it. The book takes you back to that message before the machine got built around it.
Origin Story

I did not set out to write a book. I set out to keep my faith.

  1. A pastor died on a mission trip

The grieving family came home. The Bible study gathered.

  2. The answer offered was: "God took him"

Three words. A funeral. A wife. Two children.

  3. The faith almost went with him

I sat in that Bible study and realized I was about to walk out for good.

  4. The questions started

Not theological questions. The kind sick men ask before they die.

  5. The study followed

Not seminary. History. What did the people in 34 AD actually believe?

  6. The Wrecking Crew formed

A handful of men who refused to settle for the version they were sold.

  7. The book got written

For the next person sitting in that Bible study about to walk out.
